Code Abstractions

by Andrea Rachael Danker

Reimagining the nature of reality, what we perceive may not be the actual reality of life. Do we then just exist in the creation of our consciousness?

Inhabit is a visual exploration manifested in the accumulation of energy, present within our minute existence in this universe. Amplifying the vastness of the space we reside in, the subtle nuances of the gradual matter becomes the focal point - an immersed form of looking and noticing. Through the iteration of its form, it simulates an embodiment of slowness as an act of resistance towards the constant evolving social constructs embedded within our own consciousness.

This project is a response to a text titled 'The Holographic Universe Principle' by Jaime Trosper from 2013.

Andrea Rachael Danker is an aspiring visual artist born in Malaysia. Her art practice revolves around the notion of the everyday through themes of forming connections. Exploring the interaction of our physical existence with everyday objects that surround our spaces, she seeks to extend new meaning and alterations in the way we observe the banality of everyday life. Part time educator, she enjoys conducting art lessons for children.

Engaging the field of abstraction in algorithmic art to me acts as entry points in expanding the visual developments reflective of one’s artistic expression. The outcomes can then result in amusing and interesting visuals, one that I find extends beyond the anticipation of creative input. Interested in a minimalist approach, I decided to incorporate subtle movement changes through the manipulation of variables.

In the addition of the intricate movement and growth, I hope to portray the fleeting gestures that reflects the internal dynamics of what we know versus what is really true and present in reality. The particle(s) floating and manifesting in its own form against the ample negative space brings forward the absence of spatiotemporality in an attempt of questioning the outlook of the representation and experience of our consciousness.

Exploring pixels as a means of producing visual art is a new process for me. In the earlier stage of my development; experimentation of sketches and getting myself familiarized with the syntax of coding was a vital step in moving forward. It pushed me to not be too fixated on the final visual outcome that I initially had in mind but to instead allow the formation of codes to steer me into the progression of visuals leading to my desired few sketches.

Through the manipulation of the distinct structural arrangement existing in the nature of a phyllotaxis, I wanted to modify the algorithm to generate a slow variation of a form that translates organic dispersion and the absence of symmetry. Directing the viewer’s focus on the slow yet gradual visual change invites them to ponder on their physical presence within life.
